Sidney High School
Fairborn High School
The Fairborn Girls tennis team wrapped up the regular portion of their season on Monday as they hosted Sidney in a match that had been rained out earlier in the season. Sidney has had a good season and continued that with a 5-0 win over the Skyhawks.
One of the closer matches of the night was at #1 singles, where Paige Murry dropped a well-played match by 2-6 and 4-6 scores. McKayla Lyons was once again at #2 singles, where she dropped her match 0-6 and 2-6. Wrapping up the singles was Rita Chien at the #3 spot, and lost 0-6, 0-6.
Katelyn Byczkowski and Amanda Wilson played well in a 3-6, 2-6 loss at #1 doubles, while Caitlin Sanders and Abby Lafferty wrapped up the night on the short end of a 2-6, 0-6 score t #2 doubles.
“This was a tough way for our seniors to go out tonight, but Sidney was a really good team, and our seniors did play well. I thought Paige (Murry) especially did a good job of hanging in there and playing her style throughout the match. I’m happy for Caitlin (Sanders) and Abby (Lafferty) as well. Those two came out having never played tennis, and were forced in to playing varsity pretty early in the season and they responded well. Those two and Rita (Chien) have basically rotated around the #2 doubles position and done a pretty good job overall.”
The Skyhawks ended up the season 6-14 overall, (3-7 in GWOC American League play) and they finished second in the GWOC South. “I think it says a lot about the character of our girls that we basically graduated our entire varsity team last year (11-10, 1st in GWOC South) and didn’t have a huge drop-off overall. More importantly we have five strong juniors coming back and two promising freshmen to build for next year and battle for the South title again.”
Sectional preliminaries start on Tuesday afternoon at Troy, then the main draw will be played on Wednesday, also at Troy, starting at 9:00 AM.
