Game Recap

The Fairborn Boys Soccer team tied Xenia 2-2 in their season finale. The Skyhawks needed to win the game outright in order to share the GWOC South Championship.

Fairborn scored early from a strong wing run and cross from Troy Herald who found Matt Hoffman’s right foot with a nice finish. fairborn led at the half 1-0.

Xenia tied it up in the second half with over 24 minutes to play. Fairborn again took the lead 2-1 on a magnificent shot from Joe Nickel from about 25 yards to the upper left corner “on a rope”. With a little over 20 minutes to play, Fairborn was called for an illegal slide tackle inside the 18 yard penalty box which was highly contested by Fairborn’s fans and their coaching staff. Xenia made the penalty kick to tie the gat me up at 2-2 which turned out to be the final score. Coach Dierker was very disappointed to end a championship game on such a controversial call where he believes it was a great defensive slide tackle and the call changed the outcome of the game and the season.

Fairborn next plays Carroll on Saturday, 21 October, at 7pm at Carroll.

Fairborn’s JV team battled to a 0-0 tie against Xenia’s JV team.

Meet Recap

The Fairborn Girls tennis team wrapped up the regular portion of their season on Monday as they hosted Sidney in a match that had been rained out earlier in the season. Sidney has had a good season and continued that with a 5-0 win over the Skyhawks.
One of the closer matches of the night was at #1 singles, where Paige Murry dropped a well-played match by 2-6 and 4-6 scores. McKayla Lyons was once again at #2 singles, where she dropped her match 0-6 and 2-6. Wrapping up the singles was Rita Chien at the #3 spot, and lost 0-6, 0-6.
Katelyn Byczkowski and Amanda Wilson played well in a 3-6, 2-6 loss at #1 doubles, while Caitlin Sanders and Abby Lafferty wrapped up the night on the short end of a 2-6, 0-6 score t #2 doubles.
“This was a tough way for our seniors to go out tonight, but Sidney was a really good team, and our seniors did play well. I thought Paige (Murry) especially did a good job of hanging in there and playing her style throughout the match. I’m happy for Caitlin (Sanders) and Abby (Lafferty) as well. Those two came out having never played tennis, and were forced in to playing varsity pretty early in the season and they responded well. Those two and Rita (Chien) have basically rotated around the #2 doubles position and done a pretty good job overall.”
The Skyhawks ended up the season 6-14 overall, (3-7 in GWOC American League play) and they finished second in the GWOC South. “I think it says a lot about the character of our girls that we basically graduated our entire varsity team last year (11-10, 1st in GWOC South) and didn’t have a huge drop-off overall. More importantly we have five strong juniors coming back and two promising freshmen to build for next year and battle for the South title again.”
Sectional preliminaries start on Tuesday afternoon at Troy, then the main draw will be played on Wednesday, also at Troy, starting at 9:00 AM.
